Rental Agreement
The agreement between a renter and an owner for one rental.
Last updated 2026-09-04
Who this is between
This is the agreement between the person renting an item out (the owner) and the person borrowing it (the renter), for one booking. It takes effect when the owner accepts the request and the renter pays. Rentrio is not a party to it — we run the marketplace and handle the payment.
What is being rented
The item described in the listing, for the dates in the booking, at the price shown on the booking screen. Anything listed as included — accessories, cases, chargers, a garment cover — is part of the rental and must come back with it.
The owner agrees to
- Have the item available on the agreed dates.
- Hand it over in working order and in the condition the listing describes.
- Hand it over clean and ready to use. An item that needs laundering or cleaning between renters is the owner’s job, not the renter’s.
- Disclose faults, wear, or anything that affects safe use.
- Be reachable through Rentrio messaging during the rental.
The renter agrees to
- Use the item as it is designed to be used, and follow any rules in the listing.
- Not lend, sub-rent, or sell it, and not take it out of the province.
- Return it on the agreed date, in the condition it was received.
- Not alter it, and not attempt to clean anything delicate. If something is marked, say so rather than trying to fix it — a bad cleaning attempt does more damage than the mark.
- Report damage, loss, or theft to the owner immediately.
- Accept that ordinary wear from normal use is expected and not chargeable.
Pickup and return
Both people confirm each handover in the app, and either may add photographs and notes at the time. A rental only starts once both have confirmed the pickup, and only closes once both have confirmed the return. Photographs taken at handover cannot be changed afterwards — they exist to settle disagreements about condition, which they cannot do if either person can edit them later.
Money
The renter pays the full amount up front. Rentrio holds the payment until the rental is complete, then releases the owner’s share after a short hold period during which a problem can be raised.
Some listings require a refundable damage deposit. The renter’s card is placed under a temporary hold at pickup — a hold, not a payment. It is not paid to the owner unless a damage claim is approved, and anything not settled is released. The damage and loss policy sets out the 12-hour windows and how a disputed claim is decided.
A listing may separately display a figure the owner asks renters to arrange directly with them. That one is disclosed for information only and is not collected or held by Rentrio.
If something is damaged or not returned
The renter is responsible for damage beyond ordinary wear, and for the item’s replacement value if it is not returned. See the damage and loss policy for how a claim is handled.
Rentrio does not provide insurance and does not guarantee reimbursement. Money is recovered from the renter, or it is not recovered.
Cancelling
Either person can cancel before the item changes hands, subject to the cancellation policy.
Still being finalised. A rental agreement is the document most likely to be tested if something goes badly wrong. Liability allocation between owner and renter, the enforceability of the replacement-value term, and whether a deposit should be held at all are all questions for a Nova Scotia lawyer before real money moves.
